squint.
For newsletter authors

They visit. They skim. They leave unsubscribed.

A newsletter subscribe page has one conversion and a hundred ways to fumble it. A Squint teardown reads yours at real desktop and mobile viewports and tells you what a first-time visitor actually understands in five seconds - then rewrites what they don't.

The leaks we find over and over on newsletter pages:

  • "A newsletter about X" is not a reason. The topic names the category; the promise names the payoff. "Weekly" plus a topic is the weakest pitch on the internet.
  • The invisible sample. The single best proof a newsletter has is an actual issue - and most pages hide the archive or link it below the fold. Subscribing sight-unseen is a big ask.
  • Numberless social proof. "Loved by readers" converts nobody. A subscriber count, a named reader with a face, or one specific quote about one specific issue does the work.
  • The form asks too early or too much. Email-only, one click, above the fold - after the promise, not before it. Every extra field is a percentage.
  • Mobile folds that bury the field. On a 390px screen, the hero image often pushes the subscribe form a full swipe down. Most of your traffic is that screen.
  • The consent banner owns the phone screen. A default cookie dialog can take 40% of a 390px first screen and slice the sign-up button in half - we measured exactly that on beehiiv's own homepage. If your site runs a consent tool, check what your mobile fold actually shows first-time visitors.

See the standard on real newsletter platforms: teardown #003 reviews Buttondown's homepage and teardown #007 reads beehiiv's - both produced end-to-end by the same engine that would read your page.
